Phil Campbell finished the 2016 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Phil Campbell finished seventh in Class 2A region eight with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs. The Bobcats last playoff victory came during the 2000 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. Phil Campbell was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bobcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 19.9 points a game. Since 2010, the Phil Campbell football program has struggled with a record of 19-53. Over the past 25 seasons, Phil Campbell has managed to compile a record of 93-171. Their 35.0% winning percentage ranks 46th in Class 2A and 313rd in the AHSAA. Their last winning season was 2001. The Bobcats are led by head coach Ryan Swinney who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 11-31 over the past four seasons at Phil Campbell. Under his direction the Bobcats have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Swinney. This season, the Bobcats will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region eight. The Bobcats open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Tharptown on Friday, August 25. Last year the Tharptown Wildcats finished with an overall record of 1-9 and in seventh place in Class 1A region eight. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Decatur Heritage Christian by a score of 41-7. Phil Campbell and Tharptown have met a total of 6 times on the football field.
